El futuro que nos atrevemos a crear - The future we dare creating.

  • Unir nuestros recursos para compartir espacios de conexión (un ejemplo de esto es nuestro Tesoro Escondido, el festival del MTR en Castilla, o el evento ‘Orion Nunca Más’);
  • Generar fondos con servicios, pero reinvirtiendo tiempo y energía en proyectos comunitarios (ver por ejemplo el modelo personal y empresarial de Carla);

Oh, tan emocionada.

Con amor,

Gioel

Dear friends and colleagues from Plata, Cultura y Cambio,

It is 9,30 am and I am sitting in our office, deciding how to invest my day. On the board there are lots of notes; in between them this note from Carla, which warmed my heart. I am wearing the awareness that a phase of my life is ending.

These days I negotiate my mental space between thinking about the future of our work together, and trying to make sense of our research so far. I am using these notes to clear my mind and figure out what I want to share with you on Friday, when we finally meet up to talk about the next steps. Let’s start with the meaning of our research.

I arrived to Medellin with an intuition that making social processes businesses is a messy deal. I saw ‘business’ as a space of cold relationship and a naturally tendency towards the profitable. The idea of translating social process to business felt to me like the perfect recipe for accommodating the system. The opposite to resistance: a sort of slipping, or maybe cocooning, into the logic that rules the status quo, the exercise of separating and excluding ourselves from facing the bigger structural problems. This was my instinct. Not an hypothesis of my research, but a personal perception.

I have learnt that to research one must open, let go. I knew I had to transcend my internal geometries to be able to listen. So this is what I did this year. I started compiling pieces of a puzzle. Have you heard the story of the blind people touching the elephant? They each touch a part, and describe what they have felt. Each of them thinks it is something different: they don’t get it is an elephant.
So I tried to collect pieces of the puzzle without forcing them together to make some glorious conclusion. Accepting my blindness to the whole, I tried to suspend my own judgement as well. The aha moment has not arrived into one coherent form. Instead of this famous aha, I received many gifts, in form of moments of sharing, celebration, and introspection.
Brewing between all of the moments was hiding one that I did not expect. That manifested suddenly and that felt so vulnerable, so precious, so miraculous. To me it happened while I was away in Houston, at the house of my friend Emma. The Plata Cultura y Cambio whatsapp chat would not stop buzzing because you all were going out dancing. I received a photo of the group, and then this funny giff of a dog hugging another dog, which – of course- was sent by Liliana, who plays hide and seek with her tenderness.

Sitting miles away from Medellin I become aware that our research process had become something more than the space to regularly meet other organizational leaders. We were not just researching; we were engaged with each other’s as being, with all of our special powers. Maybe it was a function of being so far away, but in that moment the beauty of our encounter crystalized and I felt it as something so real that I could almost touch it.

In itself, the care and the love that we put in our relationship is the energy that allows for creation and transformation. That, to me, was an aha moment.

So what does this have to do with the discussion of how our organizations transition to sustainability?

To explain what I have been thinking about I am going to use a theory that this year gave me new visuals to express things that I have known instinctively for a while. I might have mentioned to you that this year I took an online course called ‘TheoryU: leading from an emerging future’.

A group of researchers from MIT explains that in order for us to create with others and change ourself and our society we go through a sort of U process. Imagine the U as an huge geological structure. Standing on the left side of the U, we face the abyss. On the other side, visualize the future we want. They suggest that the way forward is not a jump, but to breath – A deepening into our personal and collective experience to reach the bottom, which is presence.
screen-shot-2016-12-29-at-5-50-25-pm
Presencing, means to be fully there, and therefore ‘to sense, tune in, and act from one’s highest future potential’. Presencing is what allows us to be truly in sync with our environment and see the opportunities. To arrive to presencing we suspend judgement, just like I did in the research process.

So what emerges? What emerges is new ways of seeing the world. Solutions that do not solve the problem but transcend it.
In our research, for me it has meant stepping beyond the duality ‘community organization vs. social enterprise’. What is more important is how we work together, how we tweak the system to make it serve new visions. Here are some examples:

  • Coming together and pulling resources to share spaces of connection (some example of this are our treasure hunt, the MTR’s festival in Castilla, or the event ‘Orion Nunca Mas’);
  • Generating funds by selling services but reinvesting time and energy in community projects (see for example Carla’s personal and business model);
  • Utilizing art to allow people to come together and share perspectives, stories, vision of the world (an example of this is the Encuentro de Voces that Liliana organizes);

In all these cases, what makes our work transformative is an intention to open the channels of communication, to boldly deal with the parts of our internal life that the system does not dare touching, and connect with diverse people in an accessible, heart-felt way. These spaces, and the intention we put into them, afford us the time to go through our own U process, and to go through it as collectives as well.

In TheoryU they suggest the challenge is to move from ‘ego’ to ‘eco’.  Exactly what we need to do in our work! But transcending our ego is so hard as individuals – What if we were to acknowledge that the growth of our organizations is just as messy and un-linear as our own growth?

And yet, as we grow, we are motivated by a vision. Moving towards the future is messy, but what is the future we see? Is our attitude towards the world allowing us to construct the world we want to be in? How do our visions close or open us towards different possible futures?

In other words, what is the future that we dare create? Can money be used to connect us, rather than separate?
This is what I will be writing about in my thesis, which will be dedicated to you. I will spend 2017 reflecting, putting into words the complexities and hearts I have felt this year. I am committed to writing this thesis for you because, I want to write something that can bring together our collective wisdom to help us see the world with fresh eyes.

Which brings me to the ACTION. What action is emerging out of our research project? I am excited to visualize this with you on Friday. Oh so excited.

With love,

Gioel
